My Afternoon Tea Menu - What Should I Serve?

afternoon tea menu

An Afternoon Tea Menu Should Have Lots of Colors, Tastes and Textures

Everything you serve on your afternoon tea menu should have different tastes and textures. Afternoon tea ideas are easy, so don't stress.

A Summer Tea Party should always include fruits that are in season.

I am only going to include a few of my favorite recipes, there are far too many out there for my little site to compete!

You could serve a scoop of ice cream in a glass, decorated. A light cheese cake is good too. Cut it into small slices before it is served. Plain and fancy biscuits and cookies make a great accompaniment to a good cup of tea!

Under the heading of 'finger foods', also come

  • Hors d,œuvres
  • Mini vol-au-vents and mini quiche
  • Canapés
  • Amuse-bouche,
  • Appetizers,
  • Cupcakes and even
  • Sushi

Anything delicious and bite sized! Make it visually enticing. Lots of colors and lots of flavors is the key.

Take a look at the growing list of Tea Cakes Recipes and
Tea Sandwiches I have also added some delicious Iced Tea Recipes. These add a wonderful splash of color to an Afternoon Tea table, and can be made the evening before your Tea Party.

Don't worry! An Afternoon Tea requires Nothing Hot Except The Tea!

Most food items can be baked a day in advance and the sandwiches can be prepared in the morning. Of course, your favorite bakery will always be willing to provide you with a fancy cake as a centerpiece, petit fours, or any specialty pastries.

But if you love to bake, you'll be in your element!

How about hosting a tea party in August, here are some August tea party menu ideas!

Let me give you a little background information on English Afternoon Teas - To Set the Scene for You.

In the 1880s Afternoon Tea became a fashionable social event in England. Upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served between four and five o'clock. The maid or butler would bring it to the drawing room, a conservatory, or even outside in the garden if the weather permitted.

Traditional afternoon tea menu consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches. Scones are served with clotted cream and preserves, and there are always cakes and pastries.

Some of the recipes have been taken from my battered 1941 recipe book which was sold to aid the British War Relief. You will find the ingredients economical and some of the the recipes rather plain, but with the wonderful selection of teas we have these days, I think it is important not to include too much sugary stuff, as it detracts from the flavor of the tea. Always serve thinly sliced lemon, honey and a sugar substitute.

Please, always consider any diabetics too, and if unsure, make it a question on your invitation.

    How To Make Desserts Healthier

Desserts become healthier when you replace the above unhealthy ingredients with…

  • Whole-wheat flour or even better, millet, spelt, or buckwheat flour.
  • Brown Sugar or even better, Xylitol.
  • Healthy oils such as olive, sunflower, linseed, borage, almond, grape seed, etc.
  • Soy milk, rice milk almond milk or sesame milk (unsweetened).
  • Natural ingredients for flavor such as fruits and nuts, cinnamon, ginger, etc.
