General Health Benefits of Tea
One of the simple facts about tea: it doesn't just taste great, it's good for you! Tea contains phytochemicals that help the body fight certain cancers. Tea can also help you maintain healthy blood cholesterol levels by inhibiting oxidation of LDL (low density lipoproteins, or "bad" cholesterol). Tea can also help boost your immune system. Specific polyphenols found naturally in tea, may have even stronger antioxidant properties than many fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants are believed to neutralize free radicals that scientists believe play a role in development of certain types of cancer and heart disease. Drinking tea may help your tooth enamel remain healthy and inhibit the formation of cavities and plaque. Tea contains fluoride. Fact. It will help keep your bones strong ladies! A diet that also includes at least two cups of oolong tea can also reduce high blood pressure, although studies show that it may take up to a year to experience yet another of the many Oolong tea benefits. Also, drinking tea contributes to maintaining your daily fluid balance - another simple fact about tea!

Health Benefits of Black Tea
Tea and CancerAn article in New Scientist magazine mentions that numerous studies suggest that green tea protects against a range of cancers, including lung, prostate and breast cancer, this is a major fact about tea - drinking tea is good for you! The reason cited is an antioxidant, EGCG Research showed that growth of human lung cancer cells with a cell receptor called 67 LR is slowed significantly after drinking just two or three cups of green tea, which contains EGCG. White tea has been claimed to be more effective. Another study from the Life Science journal Carcinogenesis showed that green tea, in combination with tamoxifen, is effective in suppressing breast cancer growth in vitro human breast cancer tumors and in vivo animal experiments in mice. A study at Taiwan's Chung Shan Medical University found that people who drank at least one cup of green tea per day were five times less likely to develop lung cancer than those who did not. Topical applications of green tea extracts (EGCG) have protective effects on UVA- and UVB-induced skin damage (photoaging and carcinogenesis). In a July 2005 review of claims made about the health benefits of green tea, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration concluded that it was highly unlikely that green tea reduces the risk of breast and prostate cancer. The FDA believes that the evidence does not support qualified health claims for green tea consumption and a reduced risk of cancer. (I have to say this - do I smell American drug company money here?) Clinical trials conducted by the University of Geneva and the University of Birmingham indicate that green tea raises metabolic rates, speeds up fat oxidation and improves insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance. There is also a suggestion that it can increase endurance in exercise by improving fat metabolism.
