Oolong Tea - What Is It?

oolong tea

Oolong Green Tea is a semi-fermented tea that is produced in Taiwan (Formosa) and China. The Chinese name means "black dragon tea". If you have ever been to a Chinese restaurant then you have probably been served Oolong green tea as it is one the most popular green teas.

The new leaves are not picked straight away, but are processed immediately after harvest.

They are left to wilt in direct sunlight, and then shaken around in bamboo baskets to help bruise the leaves. They are then shaken and laid out to dry, then shaken again, until the bruised edges turn brown from oxidization. The rest of the leaf turns slightly yellow.

The tea is then fired to stop the oxidization/fermentation process.

Oolongs are never rolled to break the leaves - it is a 'whole leaf' tea.

Oolong Tea and Weight Loss

There are many different claims being put out about how Oolong Green Tea helps you lose weight. In general green teas do help you lose weight by stimulating your metabolism, and in China green teas such as Oolong, Pu-erh, etc. are said to "make one thin".

Just remember drinking tea by itself won't work miracles, you still need to exercise regularly and eat healthily.
