Types of Tea

Tea, Like People, Comes in many Colors & Varieties!

Types of Tea - Tea is the product of the leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of the Camellia sinensis plant, prepared and cured by various methods. The word also refers to the aromatic beverage prepared from the cured leaves by combination with hot or freshly boiled water and is the common name for the Camellia sinensis plant itself.

After water, it is the most widely consumed beverage in the world.

Many people drink it in the summer as the added vasodilation caused by consuming a hot beverage has a cooling effect on the body. Contrary to popular belief, it does not make you hotter!

All teas contain health-promoting substances for the heart, body and mind. Drinking tea is a great way to relax and a good natural source of antioxidants.

TeaBenefits.com discusses the various health properties of tea and how drinking it can prevent and cure many ailments.

A daily serving of tea (three cups) contains eight times the antioxidants of one apple. Enjoy a soothing and delicious drink that is good for you. A few cups a day will keep the doctor away!

All are made from the same species of plant, though different varieties may be used, and the leaves are processed differently, and, in the case of fine white, grown differently. Puerh is post-fermented and often used medicinally.

Rooibos is not made from camellia sinensis, but is processed in very similar ways. Rooibos is an excellent way to enjoy a beneficial 'tea' without any caffeine. The term herbal tea usually refers to an infusion or tisane of leaves, flowers, fruit, herbs or other plant material that contains no Camellia sinensis.

I will be adding information about tisanes later on.

Flowering tea is a different and interesting idea for your next tea party, these are balls of tea from the Yunnan province in China.
